Philippe Starck Chandelier for Baccarat at Milan 2011

For Milan Design Week 2011, world renowned crystal company Baccarat chose to showcase lighting solutions as proposed by eight of the most famous designers. One of these international designers is Philippe Starck who designed the ‘Marie Coquine chandelier’ making use of LED technologies. This chandelier features a classic looking candelabra which is structured around an umbrella. This umbrella acts as a canopy which diffuses the light to create a mellow ambiance.

Karim Rashid, one of the most prolific designers of his generation, having worked in over 35 countries, with over 3,000 designs in production and over 300 awards under his belt has designed the ‘Ideal Home’ named KOMB HOUSE.

KOMB HOUSE by Karim Rashid is a smart and environmentally sustainable home concept and based on the design versatility. It also features the domino hobs and ovens from the collection Gorenje designed by Karim Rashid.

 

The interior of the KOMB HOUSE is composed of four spaces that represent our main activities: Play, Eat, Sleep and Cleanse. The house layout flows from the central pool and expands to four quadrants making up the living room, bathroom, bedroom and dining room. The kitchen is merged with the formal dining room and breakfast area. The ‘origami’ kitchen unit features a concealed fridge and two built-in Gorenje ovens.

Casa Son Vida by Marcel Wanders | Residential Design

World renowned designer and a personal favorite,  Marcel Wanders, and award-winning Los Angeles, Switzerland and Hong Kong-based tecARCHITECTURE collaborated on the Casa Son Vida luxury villa on the Island of Mallorca. Located approximately 15 minutes outside of Palma de Mallorca in an exclusive community called Son Vida. The 8,500 square foot luxury residence acts to  redefine luxury architecture as it is typified by the traditional Mediterranean and Tuscan styles otherwise found on the island.

 

 

The  structure is a bold, curvaceous shape that completely evades conventional definition of modern villas. The idea is that the two pieces co-exist as separate entities, meeting abruptly and then quite literally turning away from each other. Their interaction suggests a chance encounter and speaks to the deliberate and bold juxtaposition of the two elements.

Mobile Phones by Famous Designers

iida and Alessi are collaborating to release distinctive phones designed with three world renowned designers, namely, Marcel Wanders, Patricia Urquiola, and Stefano Giovannoni. The idea behind this project was to ‘help you feel wonder each time you use a mobile phone, to enable you to anticipate unprecedented ways of communicating, to give you the power to realize a lifestyle of freedom, liberated from preconceived notions, finding ways to embody the freshest ideas and never failing to stimulate your sensibility—this is the essence of iida’s mission.’ The project was revealed during DESIGNTIDE 2010, Tokyo held from October 30,2010 till November 3, 2010.

Chanel to Donate Zaha Hadid’s Pavilion to Arab World Institute

mobile-art-paris“ Chanel is to donate the exhibition pavilion designed by Iraqi-born British architect, Zaha Hadid, winner of the 2004 Pritzker Prize, to the Arab World Institute. The pavilion showcased artworks by contemporary artists inspired by Chanel’s iconic bag in 2008.

Chanel will thereby perpetuate this work designed by one of the greatest contemporary architects.

Hadid’s unique pavilion was widely appreciated during Mobile Art’s world tour and came to the attention of the Arab World Institute who contacted Chanel to express their interest in it.

Early 2011, the pavilion will be installed in front of the Arab World Institute, in the unique architectural environment of this prestigious cultural institution, which is open to all in the heart of Paris.

From then onwards, the Arab World Institute will use the pavilion to pursue a contemporary art exhibition policy in relation with the Arab countries.”

The Design Awards, held in London on October 5, 2010, honored products that showcased excellence and true innovation in design. One product that particularly caught the attention of the independent panel of judges was the Gorenje Collection, designed by Karim Rashid. Impressions: Flooring by Marcel Wanders

Dutch design legend, Marcel Wanders,  has collaborated with Senso on a new line of flooring Called “Impressions”. ‘It’s more about the texture than the color,’ says Wanders. ‘Some of them look almost edible, like chocolate.’. That said, the colors are bright and the effect of three-dimensionality rather impressive. Senso, the firm behind the flooring as suggested by Miracote, is a leader in advanced resins flooring.
