Ralph Lauren commissioned the late decorator Angelo Donghia to rennovate and design his Fifth Avenue Duplex. For this particular place, Lauren was motivated by a “simple, almost primitive desire for clean, open space”. Donghia became one of his closest friends, Lauren liked his clean lines and simplicity.
Lauren wanted a simple retreat, a place where white was predominant and where he felt like he was “floating on a cloud”, thus the elevated level of the living room. The apartment enjoys beautiful views and a great amount of natural light.
To add to the simplicity, the herring bone wood flooring was replaced with a more simple pattern and a slightly darker tint. Materials used in the kitchens and bathrooms are now very sleek and modern with glossy surfaces and clean lines. Furniture was replaced, banana plants were discarded.

Hilary Swank, award winning American actress, in an interview with Elle Décor stated that she believes a home doesn’t have to be as extravagant as a dream. “I feel comforted in smaller spaces,” she says. “They’re more nurturing.”
She hired designer Mark Zeff, with whom she’d worked previously on a New York brownstone and her California house. The two have a natural sympathy. “Hilary is very intense and also very pure,” says Zeff. “She knows what she likes. She doesn’t live in fantasy. I wanted to create a place that would give her a sense of grace and harmony.”
His options were limited, however, as Swank didn’t want any demolition or reconfiguration of the apartment, which is in a new building on the site of a former printing plant. Walls had to stay where they were; kitchen and bathrooms remained largely as is. Zeff’s first step was to furnish the rooms with serene, clean-lined pieces, many of which he chose from the Calvin Klein Home collection. “Calvin’s furniture has a strong modern sensibility without any tricks,” he explains. Then he layered in elements—historical, cultural, emotional, symbolic—to offset any sterility. Softly weathered barn wood reclaimed from a Pennsylvania farm clads one wall of the living area. The study’s shelves—custom-made built-in cabinetry designed by Zeff—are lined with artifacts: African headrests, hand-forged scissors, and sculptural Indian molds.

According to Elle Décor, Courteney Cox wanted to be an architect before becoming an actress. She mainly chose this location in Malibu, California due to its privacy especially that her previous home, which she loved so much, was located at the same level of a public pool.
With this house she decided she wanted to go for a design totally different from the previous residence, she wanted it to look like a modern barn. Notice the open spaces, the bright ambience, the use of modern materials and others that are so natural that they take the house to a more timeless feel.
Cox hired architect Michael Kovac for the job alongside Trip Haenisch for the interior design.
“There was a good balance between Michael and Trip,” says Cox. “Michael is definitely more modern; Trip tried to make the house look like it had been here forever.” The result, she says, is “very simple, with bronzed-steel trim, white walls, and wood floors. Nothing too cluttered and not a lot of fancy details.”
