Foster + Partners Reveals Designs for United Arab Emirates Pavilion at 2015 Milan Expo

1

Designs have been revealed for the United Arab Emirates pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo. Bringing the planning principles of the traditional desert city to Milan, the pavilion’s interior of self-shaded streets evokes the experience of the UAE’s ancient communities, while demonstrating the natural energy efficiency of their compact urban form.

The pavilion occupies a large site close to the centre of the Expo and is accessed via its main circulation axis, the decumanus. From here, visitors are drawn into the mouth of a canyon-like space, defined by two undulating 12-metre-high walls. Influenced by ancient planning principles, the paths through the pavilion evoke the narrow pedestrian streets and courtyards of the ancient desert city – and its contemporary reinterpretation in the sustainable Masdar City masterplan in Abu Dhabi.

Happy 2014

2013 has been an awkward year full of great achievements, failures, happy moments, and sorrows. I do believe that at the end of every year when we look back we feel awed at what we and the world went through. No matter what the circumstances have been, it is critical to look forward to the next year. 2013 was a year we learned from, a year where we cried, laughed, made mistakes, became wiser, did great things, made someone happy, and hopefully grew more compassionate towards a world that needs everyone of us so badly.
To a better 2014 full of peace & love because no matter what, if we don’t have hope & love left, the world would not survive. Have faith, wishing you an amazing year ahead!

Above I posted a video of my favorite images related to design & architecture from my instagram feed.

Cartier Most Spectacular Exhibition Yet At Grand Palais in Paris | Style and History Exhibition December 4, 2013 -February 16, 2014

7

If you are in Paris or will be soon, this is a must see exhibition.

Presented in the prestigious Salon d’Honneur room of the Grand Palais this is the first exhibition of this scale to be held in Paris since the Cartier retrospective at the Petit Palais in 1989. Commissioned by the Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais, the exhibition explores Cartier’s role in the history of style and decorative arts, from the founding of the Maison in 1847 to the mid-1970s.

The exhibition features more than 600 extraordinary pieces, presented side-by-side for the first time. Most of the pieces belong to the Cartier Collection, or have been loaned by private parties, institutions and museum collections from France and around the world. Together, these pieces are a testament to the rich and intricate history of the Jeweler to Kings and the King of Jewelers.

Cartier’s creative genius and artistic flair are presented in a new light under the innovative curatorship of Laurent Salomé, Curating Director of RMN, and his Assistant Director Laure Dalon. Salomé and Dalon approached the exhibition as an art history project, thoughtfully selecting each piece of jewelry, precious accessories, and timepieces for display.

The exhibit’s carefully curated collection of jewelry, bejeweled accessories, and timepieces is complemented by more than 300 documents from the Cartier archives: notebooks, drawings, order books, inventories, plaster casts, autochromes and photographs that provide insight into the jeweler’s creative process.

Around 20 pieces in the exhibit are taken directly from the collection of the royal family of Monaco, allowing visitors an intimate look into Princess Grace of Monaco’s jewelry box.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding tiara and Elizabeth Taylor’s ruby necklace that no present-day infinity necklace can keep up with are among the priceless pieces on show. Below are some of the pieces you may see there.

The idea of this exhibition is beautiful in every way. The fact that the artist designed 12 sculptural shoes representing 12 different relationships in his life and crafted with such beautiful detail is amazing. On the website dedicated to this exhibition, he has a story written under each of the shoes representing the relationship that inspired it. I attached the photos of the images available till today, will add the last one once uploaded to his website. Which one is your favorite?

Update: He added the last shoe, the Rock, it’s shown below.
