The New Dubai Landmark Tower for Expo 2020 Revealed | Architecture

For the 2020 Expo in Dubai, the plans for a new icon to be built have just been revealed. This icon will be considered as the main landmark just as the Eiffel Tower to Paris is. During their presentation, Emaar announced that it will be taller than Burj Khalifa but still the exact height is not decided upon. Th project will be around 6 sq. km.

The project is designed by Spanish architect Calatrava and estimated to cost $1 Billion. Calatrava however is known for projects that cost much more than the anticipated budget. This is according to the Full Calatrava website which lists every single project and its budget.

Emaar Properties will attempt to deliver the new Dubai Creek tower and a linked “mega-retail district” at the same time so that they are both open by the time Dubai’s Expo 2020 event begins .

“There’s no doubt that the Eiffel Tower has inspired over 100 years,” said Mr Calatrava. “It represents a city, a whole nation. It still today is a monument. I feel so proud to be part of a team that aims to obtain a similar achievement.”

Mr Calatrava’s design was chosen by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in February following an international competition between five of the world’s top practices.

The Dubai Creek tower will mainly serve as an architectural tower than a working building, but there will be between 18 and 20 upper floors used for a hotel with restaurants, function rooms, an interior garden space and an observation deck.

AMBS Architects, founded by Iraqi architect Ali Moussawi, designed a 230 storey  (1,152-metre-tall)  building in Al Basra, Iraaq. The plan is to have the Bride Tower as the highest building  and the first vertical city  in the world increasing the city’s capacity by 2025.

Composed of four conjoined towers, The Bride tower’s 230 storeys would be topped by an 188-metre-tall antenna. The tower will be 152 metres higher than the planned height of the Kingdom Tower, in Saudi Arabia.

The proposed building has been named “The Bride” after “the bride of gulf”, a local reference to the fertile land surrounding Basra. Comprising four towers, the structure would house supermarkets, a school, a sky garden, commercial centre and residential neighbourhoods.

House of Dior New Boutique in Seoul | Architecture

boutiqueseoul_architecture

Designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc and inspired by Dior’s couture lines,  the new House of Dior Boutique is all about the curves found in flowing fabric, details such as the stitching represent the fine tailoring of Dior’s Parisian couture. He started his first research on the project back in 2011, and just opened this June.

“I thought about the movement of the fabrics, the weaving effects, and I created a facade that would explore these elements,” the architect explains. “This white softness is like the couturier’s toile when he’s at work. It has a sense of movement that plays with light. This sculptural suppleness was my starting point.” The House archives also inspired the building’s final form: the movement of those immense architectural sails is strongly reminiscent of the dresses Cyclone and Cocotte, designed by Christian Dior in 1948. With the House of Dior building , his two great passions, for haute couture and architecture, come together in a unique creation.
